FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Caldwell College men's basketball team lost to Lincoln University, 65-49 in the championship game of the ECAC Division II Tournament, held at Fairfield University's Alumni Hall on Sunday. The Cougars complete their season with a record of 17-12, while the Lions improve to 20-9.
Lincoln never trailed in the first half, leading by as many as 13 points, 23-10 with 9:20 to play in the half. Six straight points from junior guard
Wyatt Polk (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) brought Caldwell to within seven, 25-18 at the six-minute mark. Eventually the Lions were able to take a 33-24 advantage at the half after out-rebounding Caldwell 26-16 and holding the Cougars to 33.3 percent shooting from the field.
An 8-0 run early in the second half extended Lincoln's lead to 41-29 with 17:32 remaining. Caldwell battled back with a 12-2 spree, capped by a steal and a dunk by sophomore forward
Billy McDonald (North Haven, CT/North Haven), that made the score 43-41 with 10:29 to play. Back-to-back threes by Derrick Washington and George Jackson started the Lions on a 20-6 run over the final 9:40 of the game to clinch the ECAC Tournament title.
The Cougars never got on track offensively, shooting 32.1 percent from the field for the game while committing 15 turnovers. Junior guard
Kevin Walker (Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) led Caldwell with 12 points, while junior forward
Michael Balkovic (Neptune, NJ/St. John Vianney) tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds. Balkovic and Polk were named to the All-Tournament Team, and Jackson was selected the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
