Holy Family Downs Caldwell in Men’s Basketball

Box Score
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Caldwell College men's basketball team lost to Holy Family University on the road, 90-75 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon in the Campus Center. The loss drops the Cougars to 13-8 overall and 9-5 in the conference, while the Tigers improve to 16-8, 10-5 CACC.

Caldwell built an early lead thanks to three technical fouls on Holy Family at the 16:22 mark. Junior guard Kevin Walker (Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) made 5-of-6 from the line to give the Cougars a 12-6 advantage. The lead grew to 23-16 at the 13-minute mark before the Tigers used a 17-8 run to lead 33-31 with 6:39 left in the half. Walker's third three of the half put Caldwell back on top, 41-40 with 3:40 on the clock, but Holy Family closed out the period with an 8-3 run to lead 48-44 at halftime. Walker tallied 16 points and four assists in the first half, as the Cougars shot 58.3 percent from the field.

The hot shooting did not carry over to the second half for Caldwell, as the Cougars made 3-of-9 from the floor over the first seven minutes. The Tigers pushed their lead to 62-51 during that cold spell, and maintained the 11-point spread until seven straight points gave Holy Family its largest lead of the game, 83-65 with 4:09 to play. Caldwell never came closer than 13 points the rest of the way, losing at Holy Family for the first time since 2010.

The loss overshadowed a strong game from Walker, who made all seven of his shots from the field, including 3-of-3 from three-point range, and 10-of-14 from the line en route to a career-high 27 points. He also dished out six assists. Junior guard Wyatt Polk (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield), junior forward Michael Balkovic (Neptune, NJ/St. John Vianney) and sophomore forward Terik Bridgeman (Harlem, NY/Nia Prep) each contributed 13 points, with Balkovic grabbing a team-high eight rebounds. The Tigers were led by Turhan Griffin with 20 points, while Ervin Ezell had 10 points, 10 assists and four steals.

The Cougars return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 11 with a CACC meeting with Post University at home. The game starts at 8:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
