WATERBURY, Conn. – Junior guard Kevin Walker (Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) recorded 22 points and six assists as the Caldwell College men's basketball team defeated Post University, 86-78 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Wednesday evening at the Drubner Center. The win gives the Cougars a 9-5 record on the season, including a 5-2 mark in league play. The Eagles fall to 2-11, 2-4 CACC.

Post led for almost the entire first half, leading by as many as 11 points at one point. With the score 32-23 Eagles with 4:27 left in the half, Caldwell closed out the period with a 12-2 run, sparked by threes from Walker and sophomore guard Dawan Lighty (Paterson, NJ/Kennedy), that gave the Cougars a 35-34 advantage at the break. Six players scored at least five points for Caldwell, led by seven from Lighty.

After Walker opened the second half with a three-pointer, the Eagles reeled off a 16-4 run to regain the upper hand, 50-42 with 15:11 remaining. The Cougars responded with a 12-0 spree that started with a three from Walker and ended with another trey by junior guard Wyatt Polk (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) for a 54-50 lead. Back-to-back three-pointers by Effrin Ellison and Stephen Perry Jr. put Post back in front, 58-55 with nine minutes to play.

Again Caldwell answered, getting 13 points from sophomore forward Billy McDonald (North Haven, CT/North Haven) to ignite a 22-10 run that gave the Cougars a 77-68 advantage with two minutes left. The lead grew to 11 points before Post came within five after Perry and Devin Willis hit threes with less than a minute to go. But it was not enough, as Caldwell won at Post for the first time since Jan. 5, 2010.

The Cougars shot 64.0 percent from the field in the second half and 56.6 percent for the game compared to 47.6 percent for the Eagles. Caldwell also went to the line 24 times, making 19, while Post was 7-of-14 from the charity stripe. The win is the 498th career victory for Caldwell head coach Mark Corino.

Walker was a perfect 4-of-4 from both the three-point line and the free throw line while making 7-of-10 from the field overall en route to a season-high 22 points. He also had five rebounds, two steals and a block. McDonald finished with 18 points and five boards, while Lighty added 14 points. Junior forward Michael Balkovic (Neptune, NJ/St. John Vianney) and Polk made it five Cougars in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Willis paced the Eagles with 16 points.

The Cougars host North Division leader Dominican College on Saturday, Jan. 11 in a key CACC contest. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
