Caldwell Men’s Basketball Falls to Concordia, 91-77

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game to Concordia College, 91-77 Tuesday evening in the George R. Newman Center. The loss gives the Cougars a 7-16 record overall, including a 3-11 mark in conference play, while the Clippers improve to 11-14, 7-8 CACC.

Concordia jumped out to a 12-3 advantage, then took over with a 42-22 bulge at the 6:22 mark of the first half. Caldwell scored the next 11 points, including nine points from freshman guard Dawan Lighty (Paterson, NJ/Kennedy) that pulled the Cougars to within nine, 42-33 with 3:28 on the clock. A pair of baskets by sophomore forward Michael Balkovic (Neptune, NJ/St. John Vianney) and a lay-up from freshman forward Billy McDonald (North Haven, CT/North Haven) just before halftime made the score 46-39 Concordia at the break. Argelix Gil scored 18 points in the half for the Clippers, who hit 7-of-13 from three-point range compared to 2-of-5 for Caldwell.

A basket by sophomore guard Wyatt Polk (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) made it a five-point game, 46-41 early in the second half. But the Clippers maintained control of the game, eventually using four points from Brandon Whitaker and a lay-up by Mohamed Abass to take a 59-46 lead with 11:37 remaining. The lead grew to as many as 16 points at the 5:20 mark, and Caldwell never came closer than nine points the rest of the way.

Lighty made 10-of-11 from the free throw line en route to a career-best 24 points to lead all players. Balkovic ended up with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Polk had 14 points. Freshman guard Brian Kenny (Howell, NJ/Jackson Memorial) delivered six assists, and freshman guard Aqeel Dallas (Spring Valley, NY/Ramapo) swiped four steals. Gil finished with 23 points and 13 boards to pace the Clippers, who also received 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists from Norman Pope. Pope scored his 1,000th career point during the first half.

Caldwell hosts Chestnut Hill College on Thursday, Feb. 14 in a game originally scheduled for this past Saturday. The CACC contest begins at 8:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
