Caldwell Runs Away from Felician in Men’s Hoops, 91-77

CALDWELL, N.J. – Sophomore forward Billy McDonald (North Haven, CT/North Haven) scored a career-high 23 points, as the Caldwell College men's basketball team started its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule with a 91-77 victory over Felician College Wednesday evening in the George R. Newman Center. The win is the fourth in a row for the Cougars, who improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. The Golden Falcons are now 1-4, 1-1 CACC.

Caldwell led by as many as eight points in the first half before Felician came back to tie the score at the end of the period, 36-36. Both teams shot the ball well, with the Cougars hitting 48.1 percent from the field and the Golden Falcons shooting 48.4 percent, including 5-of-12 from three-point range. Junior guard Wyatt Polk (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) led Caldwell with 10 points, while Felician received 14 points from Tim Massado in the half.

Back-to-back threes from J.R. Pringley and Jamal Reid early in the second half allowed the Golden Falcons to take a 45-42 lead with 15:54 remaining. The Cougars responded with two consecutive conventional three-point plays from junior guard Kevin Walker (Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) and McDonald that sparked a 10-0 run for a 52-45 advantage. That run began a 21-4 stretch that put Caldwell in control, 63-49 with 6:21 to play. The lead grew to as many as 20 points before the Golden Falcons came within 10 points with less than a minute to play. But the Cougars, who shot 56.0 percent from the floor in the second half, would prevail, extending their winning streak to four for the first time since the 2006-07 squad won five straight.

McDonald was 6-of-8 from the field and 10-of-11 from the charity stripe in his best game as a Cougar. Caldwell went to the line 39 times, including 30 times in the second half, and made 33 compared to 11-of-13 for Felician. Junior forward Michael Balkovic (Neptune, NJ/St. John Vianney) tallied 18 points and 14 rebounds, while Walker and sophomore guard Dawan Lighty (Paterson, NJ/Kennedy) each scored 12 points. Walker also dished out six assists, as the Cougars had 19 assists while committing 10 turnovers in the win. Massado finished with 23 points to lead the Golden Falcons.

Next up for the Cougars is another CACC game at home against Bloomfield College on Monday, Nov. 25. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
