CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team was upended by Dominican College, 79-57 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Thursday night in the George R. Newman Center. The Cougars (13-12 overall) complete their CACC schedule with an 8-10 mark in league play, while the Chargers improve to 16-8, 9-7 CACC.
Dominican took advantage of a cold shooting spell by Caldwell, opening the game by scoring the first 14 points. Momentum stayed with the visitors, as the Chargers took a 40-20 lead at halftime. The Cougars ended up going 8-of-25 from the field in the first half, while Dominican's Cory Quimby scored 14 points.
Baskets by seniors Nikola Otovic (Kraljevo, Serbia) and Anthony Gill (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle), and freshmen Kevin Walker (Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) and Wyatt Polk (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) pulled the Cougars to within 14, 42-28 early in the second half. But the Chargers put the game out of reach, building their lead up to 66-39 with 10 minutes to play. Caldwell never came closer than 22 points the rest of the way, as Dominican avenged a loss to Caldwell earlier in the season.
Freshman forward Michael Balkovic (Neptune, NJ/St. John Vianney) was the only Cougar to score in double-figures, scoring 18 points while making 8-of-9 from the charity stripe. Walker ended up with five assists. Quimby led all players with 22 points and 12 rebounds for Dominican.
Caldwell still can make the CACC Tournament if Concordia loses at Goldey-Beacom on Saturday and to Bloomfield at home on Tuesday.
Caldwell closes out the regular season with a non-conference game with St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday, Feb. 25. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
