Box Score WILMINGTON, Del. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team fell to Goldey-Beacom College on the road, 76-62 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon in the Jones Center. With the loss, the Cougars drop to 3-7 overall and 0-3 in the conference, while the Lightning improves to 4-6, 2-1 CACC.
Caldwell was held to six points over the first nine minutes, as Goldey-Beacom built a 19-6 advantage. The lead grew to as many as six points in the half before the Lightning held a 47-32 edge at halftime. Goldey-Beacom shot 60.6 percent from the floor in the first half, while sophomore guard
Kevin Walker (Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) hit all three of his three-point attempts en route to nine points for Caldwell.
In the second half, six points from sophomore forward
Michael Balkovic (Neptune, NJ/St. John Vianney) sparked an 8-1 Caldwell run that made the score 53-43 with 14:22 on the clock. Three-pointers from Marcus Porter and A.J. Picard helped to give Goldey-Beacom its largest lead of the game, 62-43 with 11:20 remaining. The Cougars didn't go away, reeling off a 13-1 run bolstered by five points from freshman guard
Dawan Lighty (Paterson, NJ/Kennedy) to pull within seven, 65-58. After a basket by senior forward
Arthur Morrison (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) made it a six-point game, 67-61 with 3:18 to play, Picard answered with back-to-back three-pointers. The treys allowed the Lightning to close out the game with a 9-1 run and stop the Cougars' comeback.
Walker led Caldwell with 14 points to go with six rebounds and four steals. Balkovic finished with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Lighty also scored 12 points for his best offensive performance as a collegian, while Morrison pitched in with 11 points. Charles Jackson scored 24 points and Picard had 22 points, as the Lightning hit 11 threes in the game compared to four for the Cougars.
The Cougars continue CACC play with a home game against Felician College on Saturday, Dec. 15. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
