Caldwell Wins Men's Basketball Thriller with Philadelphia, 62-61

CALDWELL, N.J. - A pair of free throws by junior forward Arthur Morrison (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) with 4.9 seconds remaining gave the Caldwell College men's basketball team a 62-61 triumph over Philadelphia University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon in the George R. Newman Center. The Cougars improve to 11-9 overall and 6-7 in league play with the victory, while the Rams fall to 12-6, 7-2 CACC.

With Philadelphia holding a 61-60 lead and time running down, freshman guard Kevin Walker (Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) drove to the basket and put up a shot that was blocked by Temi Adebayo. Morrison grabbed the rebound and was fouled by Adebayo while attempting a put-back, which rolled just off the rim. He drained both free throws to put the Cougars on top, 62-61 with 4.9 seconds left. Following a Philadelphia timeout with three seconds left, Jim Connolly's three-point attempt at the buzzer was off the mark, giving Caldwell the victory over the CACC South Division leaders.

The Rams got off to a fast start, hitting four three-pointers over the first 10 minutes for a 25-17 lead. Caldwell scored the next eight points, including a three by Walker, to tie the game at 25-25. The Cougars broke the tie late in the half with two Walker free throws and a basket by freshman guard Wyatt Polk (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) to take a 35-31 advantage at halftime.

Caldwell stayed on top for most of the second half, building a 54-47 lead with 8:41 remaining. A three-pointer by Nick Schlitzer sparked a 12-4 Rams run that put the visitors ahead, 59-58 with four minutes to play. Morrison and Connolly exchanged a pair of free throws down the stretch to make the score 61-60 Philadelphia with 1:28 on the clock. Philadelphia had a chance to extend its lead at the free throw line with 32 seconds left, but the Rams missed both attempts, giving the Cougars new life. Morrison made good at the line for Caldwell, handing the Rams their second loss in a row.

Freshman forward Michael Balkovic (Neptune, NJ/St. John Vianney) led the Cougars with 14 points to go with seven rebounds, hitting 6-of-9 from the field. Morrison grabbed a game-high 10 boards to go with nine points and two blocks. Caldwell struggled from long range, making just 3-of-20 from beyond the arc, but excelled at the line, shooting 15-of-16. Philadelphia was led by Connolly's 21 points and Schlitzer's 20 points.

The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Feb. 4 with a trip to Philadelphia to face Holy Family University.
