NEW CASTLE, Del. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team earned a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win on the road, 70-66 against Wilmington University Saturday afternoon in the Pratt Center. The Cougars are now 9-15 on the season, including a 6-10 mark in the conference, while the Wildcats fall to 8-17, 6-10 CACC.
Caldwell took control of the game midway through the first half with an 11-0 run that put the Cougars on top, 25-14 with five minutes remaining in the half. Senior forward Tyler Emmons (Portland, ME/Portland) scored nine of the 11 points in the run while grabbing four rebounds. The Wildcats came back late in the half, scoring the final nine points of the period, including seven by Matthew King, to make the halftime score 27-25 Caldwell. Emmons tallied nine points and nine boards in the half, as the Cougars shot 52.6 percent from the field compared to 40.0 percent for Wilmington.
Momentum stayed with the host Wildcats to start the second half, with Wilmington using a 13-6 run to take a 38-33 lead with 13:48 on the clock. Three-pointers by junior guards Nik Otovic (Kraljevo, Serbia) and Anthony Gill (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) sparked an 18-6 run that gave Caldwell the lead, 51-44 with 7:29 remaining. The Cougars still led by seven with five minutes left when the Wildcats used a 9-4 run, capped by a conventional three-point play from Marcus Gomes, that brought Wilmington within two, 60-58 with two minutes to play. But an Otovic jumper and 8-of-10 shooting from the free throw line down the stretch allowed Caldwell to stay on top and pick up the victory.
The Cougars remained hot from the floor, shooting 13-of-20 (65.0 percent) from the field in the second half. Otovic, pictured, scored 16 of his team-high 19 points in the second half, while Gill had 14 of his career-best 16 points after halftime. Gill also dished out five assists, as did senior guard Dante Rollins (East Orange, NJ/Bloomfield Tech). Emmons finished with 15 points and a career-high 13 boards in 26 minutes off the bench. After making just 48.3 percent from the free throw line in a 70-64 loss to Bloomfield College on Thursday, Caldwell converted 18-of-22 (81.8 percent) from the line on Saturday. Gomes and King led Wilmington with 22 and 18 points, respectively.
