CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team lost to the University of the Sciences, 73-62 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday night in the George R. Newman Center. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 7-14 overall and 4-9 in conference play, while the Devils move to 10-9, 6-7 CACC.
Caldwell trailed early before taking the lead late in the first half. A pair of three-pointers by junior guard Don Trifari (Montville, NJ/Paul Robeson) and another from senior guard Dante Rollins (East Orange, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) helped the Cougars take a 30-27 lead with 3:30 remaining in the first half. Rollins finished the half with eight points to lead Caldwell to a 31-29 halftime advantage. The Cougars were outrebounded 20-12 in the half but made 6-of-9 from three-point range compared to 1-of-5 for USP.
The score remained close early in the second half, with Caldwell holding on to a 42-40 lead with 13:24 to play. Five points by Tyrone Mann-Barnes sparked a 9-2 run by USP, giving the visitors a 49-44 advantage midway through the second period. The lead grew to nine points following a lay-up by Patrick Connaghan that put USP on top, 59-50 with 6:18 on the clock. Rollins converted a rare four-point play when he was fouled making a three-pointer, capping an 8-2 run that brought Caldwell within three, 61-58 with 3:20 remaining. But Caldwell missed its final five field goal attempts of the game, and the Devils outscored the Cougars 12-4 the rest of the way to earn the victory. Caldwell forced 20 USP turnovers, but the Devils shot 53.2 percent from the field for the game compared to 37.0 percent for the Cougars.
Senior forward Tyler Emmons (Portland, ME/Portland) scored a career-high 17 points while making 7-of-8 from the free throw line, and grabbed eight boards to lead Caldwell. Rollins finished with a season-high 16 points and made 3-of-4 from three-point range. Emmons and Rollins helped the Cougars' bench outscore USP's reserves, 41-5. Mann-Barnes and Adewale Adefemi each scored 19 points to pace the Devils, with Adefemi grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Cougars host Concordia College in a CACC game on Tuesday, Feb. 15, beginning at 8:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
