PEREZ ECLIPSES 1,800 CAREER POINTS IN LOSS AT WILMINGTON

NEW CASTLE, Del. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team lost to Wilmington University, 91-64 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest at the Pratt Center Saturday afternoon. The Cougars are now 11-14 overall and 7-7 in league play, while the last-place Wildcats end a 11-game losing streak and improve to 6-20, 3-12 CACC. Senior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) led all scorers with 25 points, giving him 1,802 points in his collegiate career.

Wilmington jumped out to a 22-8 lead over the first 7:33 of the first half and never looked back. Baskets by Perez and juniors Eddie Crockett (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) and Matt Cohen (Forked River, NJ/Manasquan) cut the deficit to eight, 22-14, with less than eight minutes remaining in the half. But the Wildcats pushed the lead back into double digits, and took a 39-27 advantage into the break. Wilmington held a 25-14 rebounding edge in the first half while shooting 50.0 percent from the field.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Perez and sophomore guard Dante Rollins (East Orange, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) made the score 45-35 Wilmington at the 17:22 mark of the second half. But the Wildcats used a 14-4 run to build a 59-39 lead with just under 12 minutes to play. The lead would expand to as many as 29 points, as the Cougars suffered their fourth loss in five games.

Perez hit a career-high three three-pointers en route to 25 points and nine rebounds for Caldwell. He becomes just the third men's basketball player at Caldwell to score 1,800 career points, joining All-Americans Matt Stuart and Brian Tonkovich. Stuart scored a school-record 1,888 points from 1989-94, while Tonkovich registered 1,855 points from 1994-98. Antonio Sherrod led the Wildcats with 20 points.

The Cougars host Dominican College in another CACC contest on Tuesday, Feb. 24. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
