NEW YORK, N.Y.- Caldwell University men's basketball junior
Anthony Cooper (Ashburn, Va.) added another prestigious post season award to his 2020-21 season as he was named to the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association All-Met Team. Cooper shined this season for the Cougars on the court, earning all-conference and all-region honors, in helping lead the Cougars to the NCAA Division II Tournament for this first time since 2007.
Cooper finished the season with 19.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He led the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference in scoring and finished second in the conference in steals, earning CACC All-Conference honors. Cooper was a two-time CACC Player of the Week selection and was selected as the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) DII/III Men's Basketball Player of the Week one time.
In addition to his all-conference honors, Cooper was selected to the 2020-21 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II East Region All-District Second Team as selected by NABC member head coaches in NCAA Division II.
Cooper's on the court success and under the leader of Head Coach
Mark A. Corino helped guide the Cougars to an NCAA DII Championship appearance for the second time in program history and first trip since 2007. In two games at the NCAA DII East Regional, Cooper averaged 19.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game for the Cougars. He shot 4-for-8 from downtown and connected on 16-of-20 from the free throw line.
"I am so happy for Anthony receiving this outstanding honor," said Coach Corino. "His improvement and development into an all Met player is testament to his commitment, sacrifice and work-ethic during this challenging year. With his continued work I believe he has a bright future ahead and we are expecting great things from him over the next few years."
Cooper posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to help the Cougars to the program's first NCAA Tournament victory in their win over Dominican College. He followed up the next day with 21 points and eight rebounds in a loss to top seed St. Thomas Aquinas College. For his outstanding performances, Cooper earned NCAA Division II Championship East Region All-Tournament team honors.
