Cougar Softball Eliminates Dowling at NCAA Regional

Box Score
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – The Caldwell College softball team won an elimination game against Dowling College, 8-2 at the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament Saturday afternoon at Bob Klein Field. The 20th-ranked Cougars improve to 44-11 and will face Southern Connecticut State on Sunday, May 12 at 10:00 a.m.

Caldwell and Southern Connecticut, who beat the Cougars in the first round on Friday, were supposed to play on Saturday but the game was postponed due to rain.

After Dowling (30-19) scored an unearned run in the top of the second inning, Caldwell answered with four runs in the bottom of the second without recording a hit. Three walks loaded the bases, then both sophomore Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea) and freshman Caitlin McCready (Jupiter, FL/Dwyer) were hit by pitches for a 2-1 lead. A fielding error on a grounder by freshman Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ/Triton Reg.) allowed Knorr and junior Jacklyn Bates (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) to come home and make the score 4-1.

Then in the third, sophomore Megan Fryday (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills) hit a two-run home run deep to left for a 6-1 lead. A single by Bates in the bottom of the fifth plated Fryday, who led off with a double, and senior Amy Leal (New Bedford, MA/Bishop Stang) to put the Cougars on top, 8-1. Samantha Laird led off the top of the seventh with a home run, but it was not enough to prevent Caldwell from advancing.

Senior Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) held the Golden Lions to two runs, one earned, on eight hits in seven innings to improve to 21-4 on the season. Fryday went 2-for-3 with two runs and two runs batted in, while senior Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) doubled and scored twice.

The Cougars look to avenge Friday's 3-2 loss to Southern Connecticut on Sunday, May 12. The winner will play Molloy College, which defeated the Owls, 5-3 in eight innings earlier today.
