CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team defeated East Region foe Southern Connecticut State, 4-1 and 6-0 in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The victories extend the Cougars' winning streak to 15 games to improve to 19-4 on the season. The Owls, who won the East Super Regional and advanced to the Division II College World Series in 2012, are now 15-11.
Caldwell trailed 1-0 in the first game until the bottom of the sixth inning. A single by sophomore
Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea) was misplayed, allowing sophomore
Sarah Almasy (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) to score from first. Knorr later came home on an error to put the Cougars on top, 2-1. Still in the sixth, freshman
Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ/Triton Reg.) drew a bases-loaded walk, and sophomore
Alyssa Calderon (Fontana, CA/Etiwanda) came home on an error for a 4-1 edge.
Senior pitcher
Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) held the Owls to one run on seven hits in a complete-game victory to improve to 9-1 on the season. Southern Connecticut's Kelsey Cockrill gave up just four hits in six innings, as all four runs were unearned.
The Cougars didn't wait long to get on the scoreboard in the second game, as Calderon plated Knorr with a double and senior
Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) hit a two-run triple in the bottom of the first inning. Then in the third, Cascone tripled again to drive in sophomore
Sara Zambelli (West Milford, NJ/West Milford) and later scored on a passed ball for a 5-0 lead. Cascone closed out the scoring with a home run to centerfield, her fifth of the season.
Freshman pitcher
Amber Padilla (Chino, CA/Pomona Catholic) tossed a complete-game shutout, limiting the Owls to four hits while striking out four and walking three to improve to 6-1. The two wins avenged last year's defeat to Southern Connecticut in the NCAA Division II East Region finals in New Haven, Conn.
The Cougars play a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Post University on Friday, Apr. 5, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Waterbury, Conn.
