BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Caldwell College softball team lost a pair of non-conference games to LIU Post, 2-1 and 3-2 Wednesday afternoon at the LIU Post Softball Complex. The results give the Cougars a 35-10 record on the season, while the Pioneers, ranked 15th nationally, are now 40-11.
LIU Post took a 1-0 lead in Game 1 on a home run by Liz Weber in the bottom of the third, then added another run in the fourth for a 2-0 advantage. Sophomore
Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea) made it a one-run game with a solo home run in the sixth. But the Cougars were unable to score the tying run despite putting runners on second and third in the sixth. Freshman
Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ/Triton Reg.) went 3-for-3, and junior
Jacklyn Bates (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) had two hits for Caldwell.
Senior pitcher
Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) held the Pioneers to two runs on seven hits.
The second game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth inning. Freshman
Caitlin McCready (Jupiter, FL/Dwyer) came home on a grounder by sophomore
Alyssa Calderon (Fontana, CA/Etiwanda), and Calderon scored on a single by junior
Nicole Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) for a 2-0 Caldwell lead. The Pioneers put runners on first and second with one out in the seventh for Weber, who doubled in a run. After a grounder left LIU Post down to its last out, Alexis Gonzalez hit a two-run single to give the Pioneers a 3-2 victory.
Freshman
Amber Padilla (Chino, CA/Pomona Catholic) took the loss for Caldwell, allowing three runs on 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings. It was her first loss since Mar. 9.
The Cougars play another non-conference doubleheader on Friday, Apr. 26 at Molloy College, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
