CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team lost a pair of games to Dominican College, 8-2 and 8-5 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Cougars, ranked 17th in the latest NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll, fall to 32-7 overall and 20-2 in conference play. The Chargers (23-17) remain unbeaten in the CACC at 18-0.
Dominican took control of Game 1 with three home runs in a four-run third inning. Junior
Jacklyn Bates (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) hit a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the third, and sophomore
Megan Fryday (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills) scored an unearned run in the sixth for Caldwell. But the Cougars were unable to overcome the slow start, losing for the first time in conference play this season.
Freshmen
Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ/Triton Reg.) and
Caitlin McCready (Jupiter, FL/Dwyer) each had two hits for the Cougars, while Alyssa Schwed homered and went 4-for-4 for the Chargers.
Dominican struck again in the third inning of Game 2, using a two-run home run by Delaney Childers to spark a three-run inning. Caldwell got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, when senior
Amy Leal (New Bedford, MA/Bishop Stang) came home on a wild pitch. After Dominican added a run in the top of the fifth, Reighn hit a two-run home run and sophomore
Alyssa Calderon (Fontana, CA/Etiwanda) followed with a deep shot to left field in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score at 4-4.
In the bottom of the sixth, Reighn drove in sophomore
Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea) with a sacrifice fly for a 5-4 Caldwell lead. But the Cougars could not close out the game, as Dominican put four runs on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh, including a two-run double by Kathryn Coles.
Reighn went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in for Caldwell in Game 2, with Fryday and senior
Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) also recording two hits apiece.
The Cougars play a CACC doubleheader at Goldey-Beacom College on Saturday, Apr. 20, beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Wilmington, Del.
