BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Caldwell College softball team won a pair of games against Concordia College, 1-0 and 7-1 to sweep a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Clipper Softball Field. The victories extend the winning streak to 25 games for the Cougars, who are now 29-4 overall and 18-0 in CACC play. The Clippers drop to 5-20, 4-12 CACC.
In the first game, Caldwell received a strong pitching performance from sophomore
Hanna Walkinshaw (Aptos, CA/Aptos), who struck out six batters in a three-hit shutout. The Cougars scored the only run they would need in the top of the second inning. With the bases loaded and two out, junior
Jacklyn Bates (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) hit a grounder that allowed freshman
Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ/Triton Reg.) to score from third.
Sophomore
Alyssa Calderon (Fontana, CA/Etiwanda) had three of Caldwell's five hits, including two doubles, and Reighn had the other two. Concordia pitcher Theresa Magnani held the Cougars to one run on five hits while striking out five.
Caldwell had the bats working in Game 2, scoring three runs on five hits in the top of the first inning. Calderon doubled home freshman
Caitlin McCready (Jupiter, FL/Dwyer) and later scored on a single by junior
Nicole Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville). She also plated Knorr on a sacrifice fly in the fourth, and singled home McCready in the sixth after McCready tripled to drive in Knorr. Calderon finished the day 5-for-6 at the plate with three doubles and three RBI. McCready went 3-for-3 with three runs in Game 2, while Knorr, Velardi and Reighn had two hits apiece.
Sophomore
Sarah Almasy (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) also pitched well, limiting Concordia to one run on five hits while striking out five and walking one in seven innings.
Caldwell hosts Georgian Court University in another CACC doubleheader on Thursday, Apr. 11, beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field. The games were originally scheduled to be played on Friday but were moved due to the forecast for rain.
