KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Caldwell College softball team split a pair of games at the Rebel Spring Games Sunday afternoon at Oren Brown Field. The Cougars defeated 16th-ranked Augustana College, 3-2 before losing to Ferris State University, 2-1. The results give Caldwell a 3-3 record on the season.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth against Augustana, the Cougars cut the deficit in half with groundout by freshman
Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ/Triton Reg.) that brought home sophomore
Sarah Almasy (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) in the sixth. Then in the bottom of the seventh, Caldwell put runners at second and third with two outs for sophomore
Briana Gaspich (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial). Gaspich delivered a walk-off single to center, scoring sophomore
Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea) and senior
Amy Leal (N. Bedford, MA/Bishop Stang) with the tying and game-winning runs.
Senior
Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) went the distance in the circle, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out five and walking two. Sophomore
Alyssa Calderon (Fontana, CA/Etiwanda) went 3-for-3 at the plate.
In the day's second game, Gaspich drove home junior
Jacklyn Bates (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) with a grounder in the third for a 1-0 lead. Caldwell stayed on top until the bottom of the sixth, when Amy Dunleavy doubled home Morgan Kramerich, then scored on a single by Allison Webber to lead 2-1. Bulldog pitcher Dana Bowler retired the Cougars in order in the seventh to wrap up the win.
Knorr had both of Caldwell's hits in the game, while sophomore
Hanna Walkinshaw (Aptos, CA/Aptos) pitched a strong game, allowing two runs on six hits in six innings of work.
The Cougars continue play at the Rebel Spring Games on Monday, Mar. 1, facing St. Cloud State at 3:00 p.m. before the rematch with Augustana at 5:00 p.m. at Oren Brown Park.
