WATERBURY, Conn. – The Caldwell College baseball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Post University Tuesday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. The Cougars, who won the first game 5-4 before falling 2-0 in Game 2, are now 12-25 overall and 9-9 in league play, while the Eagles are 14-26, 6-12 CACC.

Caldwell trailed 4-2 in the first game before rallying in the top of the eighth inning. The Cougars loaded the bases on a leadoff single by sophomore Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo), a walk and a hit-batsman. Then sophomore Thomas Pisano (N. Bellmore/Mepham) was hit by a pitch to plate Nunez. Sophomores Phil Ragusa (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) and Stephen Dodd (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) both drew bases-loaded walks, giving Caldwell a 5-4 lead.

Freshman Robert Humes (Berlin, NJ/Winslow Twp.) pitched five innings of relief, allowing a run on four hits while striking out three to earn the win. Senior Craig Gourley (Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) retired the final two batters to earn the save. Freshman Michael Sheridan (Caldwell, NJ/Seton Hall Prep), who threw a no-hitter in his last start on Apr. 19, started and gave up three runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Post scored twice in the bottom of the first inning of Game 2 on two separate wild pitches to lead 2-0. The Cougars managed to put a runner on second only twice, and never had more than one hit in the same inning, as Andrew Harris kept Caldwell off-balance. Harris pitched a complete-game shutout, walking two and striking out two to improve to 2-2 on the season.

Senior Matt Cook (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) also had a strong game, giving up just four hits and two runs, one earned, while fanning seven and walking four in eight innings of work. Nunez had two hits in the loss.

Caldwell wraps up CACC play with a doubleheader at home against Wilmington University on Sunday, Apr. 29. The first game starts at 1:00 p.m. at the Kiwanis Oval.
