COUGAR SOFTBALL LOSES TWICE TO WILMINGTON IN CACC DOUBLEHEADER

NEW CASTLE, Del. - The Caldwell College softball team was swept by Wilmington University, 4-0 and 4-3 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Monday afternoon at Asbury Field. The Cougars, who entered the day having won 13 of their past 14 games, fall to 18-16 overall and 8-6 in conference play. The Wildcats improve to 18-14, 8-4 CACC.

Wilmington opened the first game with a run in the first inning, another in the second and two more in the third for a 4-0 lead. Caldwell managed just three hits off Wildcats pitcher Katie Warrington, who blanked the Cougars while striking out six and walking one in seven innings. Senior Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) lost for the first time in eight starts, allowing four runs on eight hits in five innings of work.

In the second game, Caldwell scored its first run of the day in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) and scored on a single from sophomore Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, PA/Owen Roberts). Wilmington answered with a two-run single by Amanda Cordrey in the bottom of the first and solo home runs from Lauren Szymanski and Nicole Gebhart in the bottom of the third for a 4-1 advantage.

In the top of the sixth, freshman Mariah Lucena (Belleville, NJ/Belleville), pictured, singled home junior Rebecca Ashley (Bellingham, MA/Mt. St. Charles Acad.), and junior Katie Margiotta (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) scored on a passed ball to make the score 4-3. Still in the sixth with runners on first and third, sophomore Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony) flied out to right field. Freshman Jessica Miller (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow) tried to score from third on the play but was thrown out at the plate, denying Caldwell of the game-tying run.

Wilson pitched all six innings for the Cougars, allowing four runs on five hits to fall to 6-9. Heather Karasek earned the victory for Wilmington, giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Caldwell plays at Concordia College on Tuesday, Apr. 19 in a CACC doubleheader. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. in Bronxville, N.Y.
