PFEIL HELPS COUGARS BLANK BLOOMFIELD IN BASEBALL, 2-0

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - Junior right-hander Stephen Pfeil (Hampstead, NH/Pinherton Acad.) pitched a four-hitter to lead the Caldwell College baseball team to a 2-0 victory over Bloomfield College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Friday afternoon at Wright's Field. The win keeps the Cougars (27-17 overall) in second place in the conference standings with a 17-8 record, just percentage points behind league-leading Philadelphia University (16-7). The Deacons drop to 16-34 overall, 7-18 CACC.

The Cougars scored all the runs they would need in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Ray Keelan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) walked with the bases loaded to plate senior Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY/Washingtonville), then freshman Gabriel Molina (Bronx, NY/Monroe) hit a sacrifice fly to bring home sophomore Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL/Broward CC) for a 2-0 lead. Caldwell totaled eight hits in the game but was unable to score after the first inning, stranding 12 runners on base for the game.

On this day Pfeil did not need the support, as he scattered four hits while striking out 10 and walking only one in nine innings for his second shutout of the season. With the win, Pfeil evens his record at 4-4 on the year. Matthew Snyder worked seven innings for Bloomfield and allowed two runs on seven hits and three walks to absorb the loss.

The Cougars and Deacons wrap up the regular season with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 3. The first game is set to start at 12:00 p.m. at Smith Field in Parsippany, N.J.
