Shawn McCray was a standout player for the men's basketball team and was part of the inaugural season of the program in 1987-88. In two seasons for the Cougars, McCray made an immediate impact on the program. He was the program's first 1,000-point scorer as he finished with 1,059 in just two seasons. He scored 586 points in 1987-88, the program's first season, which is the second highest single season total in its history.
