CALDWELL, N.J. -- The quarterback position, maybe more than any in sports, requires a leadership component that goes beyond athletic skill. And while Caldwell University sophomore signal-caller
Josh Smith has talent in abundance, it's that ability to lead his team that makes him one of the league's top players and a driving force in the team's success.
All Smith did as a freshman was earn CSFL Co-Rookie of the Year honors by passing for 706 yards and six touchdowns, running for 446 and five more scores and handling all the Cougars' punting duties.Â
Now he's tasked with taking on the role of captain, a rarity for sophomores but one that seems natural to the Parsippany, N.J., native. He took a few minutes to talk about the upcoming season and his high expectations for the team and himself.
What is your main goal for your team this season, both on and off the field?
On the field, our main goal is to be undefeated in CSFL play and take home the championship. Off the field, our goal is to be leaders that everyone can look up to.

A core value we have that will drive us is to play fast and be physically tough in every situation.
What is the one thing you want fans to know about your team?
We have a ton of entertaining players this season.
Who is a player on your team that we should be watching out for this season, and why
I think sophomore wide receiver
Joey Ciccotelli is someone you should be watching out for this season. He is a big-time playmaker and performs really well every day in practice.
What is one personal goal you're striving for this season?
My goal is to be a better and much improved leader.
What are you most looking forward to in your first season as a team captain?
I am mostly looking forward to accomplishing big things and making history with this team.
