CALDWELL, N.J. -- The Play4Kay initiative was launched in honor of the outstanding coach Kay Yow, the esteemed head coach of the North Carolina State women's basketball team and a founding member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). Coach Kay was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987. Coach Kay continued to lead her players, inspire those around her, and uplift the community that stood around her through the ups and downs of fighting cancer for 22 years until her passing in 2009.
This season marks the third consecutive year that Caldwell University Athletics is proudly contributing to the Play4Kay mission. Caldwell women's basketball will be participating in this year's event during their home contest on November 25 at 5:30 p.m. vs. CACC foe Goldey-Beacom College, dedicating their performances to raising awareness and funds for the Kay Play4Kay Cancer Fund.
Her legacy extended beyond the courts, as she persevered with her diagnoses and turned this into a nationwide movement- uniting the basketball community in the fight against all cancers that affect women's health. Coach Yow once said, "But then I see I'm helping others in a greater way than I ever have. That's the amazing thing, you know?" Even after her passing, Yow's words continue to motivate programs around the country to compete for a cause greater than the game itself.
The initiative is not only to honor the legendary name of Coach Yow but also to embody the values of compassion, teamwork, and service that define the Cougar community as we proudly use our community to give back to organizations. Fans, students, and local supporters are encouraged to get involved by attending the game, wearing pink in solidarity, and making donations to help continue Coach Yow's vision of strength, courage, and hope.
Together, we can make a difference by supporting the funding of women fighting cancer, allowing them to focus on their treatment without worrying about payments and expenses. We can also make an impact both on and off the court in the ongoing fight against cancer, and unite together.
