Box Score RINDGE, N.H. – The Caldwell University women's soccer team opened the 2014 season with a 3-2 loss to Southern New Hampshire University at the Franklin Pierce University Tournament Thursday afternoon at Sodexo Field. The game marked the season opener for both squads.
The Cougars broke a scoreless tie in the 33rd minute, when senior forward
Melissa Stec (Salt Point, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) scored off a pass up the middle from senior forward
Natalie Migoya (Lincoln Park, NJ/Morris Catholic) for a 1-0 lead. With the score still 1-0 Caldwell 12 minutes into the second half, the game changed with a flurry of goals in a seven-minute span. The Penmen pulled even in the 58th minute on a goal by Alena Woodarek, only to have Stec regain the lead just 17 seconds later with her second goal of the game. A pass by senior defender
Lauren Iuliucci (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea) sent Stec in alone on a breakaway.
The lead did not last long, as Southern New Hampshire's Olivia Parsons tied the score with an unassisted goal less than two minutes after Stec's tally. Then in the 65th minute, Gabby Cappello found the net with help from Megan Hanna's second assist of the game to put the Penmen on top for good.
Senior goalkeeper
Robin Franchi (Sewell, NJ/Deptford) faced 26 shots, making a career-high 12 saves in goal for Caldwell. Autumn Scanlon had one save for SNHU, which out-shot the Cougars 26-8.
Caldwell wraps up play at the Franklin Pierce Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 6 against the host Ravens at 3:00 p.m.
