Caldwell Softball Beats Georgian Court at NCAA Regional

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Caldwell College softball team, ranked ninth nationally, defeated Georgian Court University, 6-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament, held at Adelphi University on Friday. The Cougars (42-7) advance to play Queens College on Saturday, while the Lions (31-22) will play Adelphi in an elimination game.

Caldwell, making its seventh consecutive appearance at the NCAA regional, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a double by junior Alyssa Calderon (Fontana, CA/Etiwanda) that brought home sophomore Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ/Triton Regional). Then in the second, freshman Lauren Frye (Jupiter, FL/Jupiter) hit a solo home run to center for a 2-0 advantage.

The Cougars broke open the game in the bottom of the fourth with four runs. Reighn delivered a two-run single to plate sophomore Caitlin McCready (Jupiter, FL/Dwyer) and junior Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea). McCready and Calderon also singled in runs in the inning.

Sophomore pitcher Amber Padilla (Chino, CA/Pomona Catholic) held Georgian Court scoreless over six innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out five. The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year, Padilla improves to 16-4 with the win. Freshman Sydney Ponto (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) tossed a scoreless seventh inning with two strikeouts.

Calderon led the offense, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs batted in. She now has 23 doubles to tie Reighn for the school record for doubles in a season. McCready had two hits, while Reighn and Frye scored twice.

Caldwell faces Queens on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in the second round of the East Regional. Queens defeated host Adelphi, 5-0 in the first game of the day.
