Box Score GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Caldwell College softball team won its second game at the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament, beating Queens College, 5-2 Saturday morning at Adelphi University's Janet L. Fricke Field. The Cougars (43-7) advance to the final day of the regional for the fourth consecutive season.
Caldwell scored all the runs it would need in the first inning. Junior
Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea) led off with a walk and advanced to third on two wild pitches. After sophomore
Caitlin McCready (Jupiter, FL/Dwyer) also walked and stole second, a double from sophomore
Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ/Triton Regional) plated both runners for a 2-0 lead. Reighn later scored on a wild pitch to make the score 3-0.
Then in the second inning, McCready hit a two-out single to drive home freshman
Amy Hickman (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty), and Knorr stole home for a commanding 5-0 lead. Sophomore pitcher
Amber Padilla (Chino, CA/Pomona Catholic) did the rest, allowing a double in the top of the first, and a single and two-run home run by Nicole Pirretti in the top of the fifth. She struck out five and walked two to earn her 17th victory of the season and second of the regional. Reighn had two of Caldwell's five hits on the day, while Knorr scored twice.
This is the first time since the two-site regional format began in 2009 that the Cougars will enter the final day with a 2-0 record. The past three years saw Caldwell face the host team on the final day needing two victories to advance to the Super Regional, with each season ending with a loss.
The Cougars await the winner of this afternoon's elimination game between Queens and Georgian Court University. Caldwell plays the winner on Sunday, May 11 at 2:30 p.m. for the regional bracket championship.
