CLERMONT, Fla. – The Caldwell College softball team wrapped up its Florida trip with shutout victories over the University of Minnesota-Crookston and St. Michael's College Thursday afternoon at the National Training Center. The 17th-ranked Cougars head north with a 10-1 record that included five shutout wins.
In an 8-0 triumph over UM-Crookston, Caldwell broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning with a two-run single by senior
Nicole Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville). The Cougars exploded for six runs in the top of the fifth to put the game away. Junior
Alyssa Calderon (Fontana, CA/Etiwanda) delivered a two-run single, and junior
Megan Fryday (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills) had a two-run triple in the inning. Velardi also singled home a run and later scored from third on a wild pitch.
Sophomore pitcher
Amber Padilla (Chino, CA/Pomona Catholic) blanked the Golden Eagles (2-8) on five hits while striking out six without a walk in five innings to improve to 3-1.
Against St. Michael's (0-7), it was junior
Hanna Walkinshaw's (Aptos, CA/Aptos) turn to put up zeroes, as Walkinshaw tossed a three-hit shutout over seven innings with four strikeouts and no walks. Walkinshaw, who improved to 3-0 with the win, did not allow an earned run in 18 1/3 innings and six appearances in Florida.
Caldwell scored two unearned runs in the fifth inning and received RBI doubles from Calderon and sophomore
Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ/Triton Regional) to win, 4-0. Calderon and Reign each had two hits to lead the Cougar offense.
Caldwell begins its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on Tuesday, Mar. 25 at defending CACC regular-season champion Dominican College. The first game starts at 3:00 p.m. in Orangeburg, N.Y.
