WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Caldwell College softball team defeated St. Cloud State University, 6-5 at the Rebel Spring Games Monday morning at the DiamondPlex. The 18th-ranked Cougars improve to 6-1 on the year with the victory, while the Huskies fall to 4-7. Caldwell was scheduled to play the University of New Haven in the afternoon but the game was canceled due to rain.
A pair of doubles helped St. Cloud State score a run in the bottom of the first inning to lead 1-0. In the top of the fourth, junior
Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea) singled home junior
Megan Fryday (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills), and sophomore
Caitlin McCready (Jupiter, FL/Dwyer) hit a two-run single to bring home junior
Sara Zambelli (West Milford, NJ/West Milford) and freshman
Lauren Frye (Jupiter, FL/Jupiter) for a 3-1 advantage. The Huskies responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.
In the top of the sixth, the Cougars scored twice on a sacrifice fly from McCready and a run-scoring single from sophomore
Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ/Triton Regional) to tie the score at 5-5. Then in the seventh, Fryday led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice by sophomore
Rachel Berzak (Cypress, CA/Pacifica), advanced to third on a passed ball and scored the go-ahead run on a bunt from freshman
Amy Hickman (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty). St. Cloud State put runners on first and second with two out in the bottom of the seventh, but junior
Hanna Walkinshaw (Aptos, CA/Aptos) retired the final batter on a groundout to end the game.
Walkinshaw pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of freshman
Sydney Ponto (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford), who allowed five runs on eight hits while striking out six and walking one in 4 2/3 innings. Knorr finished with three hits, while McCready had two hits and three runs batted in. Hickman also delivered two hits.
Caldwell returns to action on Wednesday, Mar. 19 with games against Slippery Rock University and Minnesota State-Moorhead at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.
