MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The Caldwell College baseball team scored four times in the top of the ninth inning to beat Bloomfield College, 7-5 in a non-conference game Friday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. The win gives the Cougars a 9-31 record on the season, while the Deacons fall to 8-32.
Down 5-3 heading into the ninth, Caldwell started the comeback with a single by junior
Stephen Luczaj (N. Merrick, NY/Mepham) that plated junior
Steve Valenti (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian). After a single by senior
Anthony Morena (Westbury, NY/Holy Cross) loaded the bases, senior
Adolfo Lopez (Ontario, CA/Ontario) hit a sacrifice fly to score junior
Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo). An error on the play also allowed Luczaj to score the go-ahead run. A misplayed grounder off the bat of junior
Thomas Pisano (N. Bellmore, NY/Mepham) brought home Morena for a 7-5 lead.
Valenti worked a scoreless ninth to earn the save and give the Cougars the victory. Junior
Gary Gurino-Burns (N. Massapequa, NY/Plainedge) pitched 2/3 of an inning for the win. Nunez, Luczaj, Morena and Lopez each delivered two hits.
The Cougars and Deacons meet again on Sunday, May 5 in the season finale. The first pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. at the Kiwanis Oval in Caldwell, N.J.
