LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Caldwell College softball team won its second game on the first day of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament, defeating Wilmington University, 1-0 Thursday afternoon at Georgian Court University. The second-seeded Cougars (41-10) advanced through the winner's bracket to face top-seeded Dominican College on Friday.
Caldwell scored the only run they would need in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore
Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea) led off with a single, moved to second on a bunt by freshman
Caitlin McCready (Jupiter, FL/Dwyer) and came home on a single by
Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ/Triton Reg.) for a 1-0 lead. Freshman pitcher
Amber Padilla (Chino, CA/Pomona Catholic) did the rest, shutting out the Wildcats (33-19) on four hits while striking out two and walking three. Padilla, who improved to 13-2 on the year, blanked Wilmington during the regular season in another 1-0 game on Apr. 8.
Padilla won a pitcher's dual with CACC Pitcher of the Year Katie Warrington, who gave up one run on two hits while striking out five before leaving the game with an injury in the bottom of the fifth.
Earlier in the day, Caldwell defeated Bloomfield College, 11-3 in six innings. Senior
Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) went 2-for-3 with four runs batted in, while senior pitcher
Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) went the distance in the circle to improve to 19-4 on the season. The victory gave the Cougars their fourth 40-win season in the history of the program, joining the teams from 2004, 2005 and 2010.
The Cougars will play Dominican College at 1:00 p.m. at the GCU Softball Complex.
