LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Caldwell College softball team opened play at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament with an 11-3 victory over Bloomfield College Thursday morning at Georgian Court University. The second-seeded Cougars improve to 40-10 on the season, while the Lady Deacons, seeded seventh, fall to 20-20.
Bloomfield struck first, with Alexandria Smith hitting a two-run double in the top of the third for a 2-0 lead. Caldwell answered in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases for senior
Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner), who doubled home freshmen
Caitlin McCready (Jupiter, FL/Dwyer) and
Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ/Triton Reg.). Junior
Nicole Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) followed with a two-run single to put the Cougars on top, 4-2.
Then in the fifth, McCready and Cascone each had two-run hits for an 8-2 advantage. After Bloomfield scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth, Caldwell scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game, 11-3.
Senior pitcher
Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) held the Lady Deacons to three runs, two earned, on five hits while striking out five in six innings to improve to 19-4. Sophomore
Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea), Cascone and McCready each delivered two hits for Caldwell.
The Cougars will play third-seeded Wilmington at 4:00 p.m. at the GCU Softball Complex.
