Season Ends for Cougar Softball with Loss to Molloy

Box Score
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - The Caldwell College softball team ended its season with a 6-0 loss to Molloy College in the finals of the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament Sunday afternoon at Bob Klein Field. The Cougars, who defeated Southern Connecticut State in an elimination game earlier in the day, finish the 2013 season with a 45-12 record.

This was the sixth consecutive appearance in the regional tournament and the ninth in the last 10 years for Caldwell. The 45 wins ties the program record for most wins in a season, matching the 2004 squad that finished 45-7 and advanced to the Women's College World Series by winning the Northeast Region Tournament.

Molloy (50-12) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run homer by Milan Botte, then added runs in the fourth and fifth innings to make it 4-0. A two-run home run by Jeana Frey in the top of the seventh put the game out of reach. Pitcher Megan Butterworth held the Cougars to two hits for the complete-game shutout.

Freshman Amber Padilla (Chino, CA/Pomona Catholic) pitched for Caldwell and gave up four runs, three earned, on seven hits in six innings of work. Junior Nicole Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) and freshman Caitlin McCready (Jupiter, FL/Dwyer) had the hits for the Cougars, while McCready made an outstanding catch at the fence in the seventh inning.

Earlier in the day, sophomore Alyssa Calderon (Fontana, CA/Etiwanda) hit a two-run home run and senior Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony) pitched all eight innings in a 3-2 victory over Dowling. The winning run was scored in the top of the eighth on a bases-loaded walk.

The loss to Molloy also ended the collegiate careers of seniors Wilson, Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) and Amy Leal (New Bedford, MA/Bishop Stang). The trio helped the Cougars compile a record of 158-69, the most victories in a four-year period in the history of the program.

Molloy advances to the Super Regional against Adelphi University, which won the other East Region bracket.
