CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell College baseball team lost twice to Post University, 4-3 and 6-0 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at the Kiwanis Oval. The Cougars drop to 8-27 overall and 6-11 in league play, while the Eagles are now 16-17-1, 5-11 CACC.
Caldwell took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning of Game 1, as senior
Phil Ragusa (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) plated senior
Anthony Morena (Westbury, NY/Holy Cross) with a sacrifice fly. Post scored twice in the top of the third and added a run in the fourth to lead 3-1. Then in the bottom of the eighth, Morena singled to score juniors
Stephen Luczaj (N. Merrick, NY/Mepham) and
Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph) and tie the game at 3-3. But Mike Shada hit a two-out single in the top of the ninth to score Billy Gonzalez with the go-ahead run.
Junior right-hander
Chris DeRogatis (N. Arlington, NJ/Queen of Peace) pitched well for Caldwell, giving up three runs, two earned, on eight hits in six innings. Ragusa finished with two hits.
In the second game, Post's Matt Cambria shut out the Cougars on seven hits while striking out seven and walking four in a complete-game effort. The Eagles scored a run in the fourth, two runs in the fifth and three more in the eighth to put the game away. Nyitray delivered two hits for Caldwell in the loss.
The Cougars face Wilmington University in a CACC doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 27, beginning at 12:00 p.m. in New Castle, Del.
