CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell College baseball team dropped a pair of games to Chestnut Hill College, 20-6 and 11-0 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Kiwanis Oval. The Cougars fall to 8-24 overall and 6-8 in league play, while the Griffins improve to 16-20, 9-9 CACC.
Caldwell got off to a good start in Game 1, as senior
Anthony Morena (Westbury, NY/Holy Cross) and juniors
Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo) and
Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) drove in runs in the first three innings for a 3-1 lead. But Chestnut Hill used a six-run fourth inning and an 11-run sixth inning to put the game out of reach. O'Donnell went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs batted in, while juniors
Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph),
Thomas Pisano (N. Bellmore, NY/Mepham) and
Stephen Luczaj (N. Merrick, NY/Mepham) had two hits apiece.
Game 2 belonged to Chestnut Hill starting pitcher Dominic Raia, who held the Cougars hitless while striking out eight and walking one. Raymond Puskar hit a three-run home run, while Taylor Steen and Desmond Lites had four hits each for the Griffins. Chestnut Hill totaled 31 runs on 38 hits on the day.
Caldwell battles to stay in the hunt for a playoff spot with a CACC doubleheader against Concordia College on Monday, Apr. 22. The first game begins at 1:30 p.m. in Bronxville, N.Y.
