Caldwell Softball Extends Winning Streak to 13 with Sweep of Nyack

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team took two games from Nyack College, 4-0 and 7-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Cougars, who have won 13 straight games, improve to 17-4 overall and 8-0 in the conference. The Warriors fall to 4-11, 0-10 CACC.

In the first game, Caldwell didn't get on the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth inning, when sophomore Megan Fryday (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills) hit a two-run home run. The blast marked the first hit of the game for the Cougars. Later in the inning, sophomore Alyssa Calderon (Fontana, CA/Etiwanda) delivered a two-run single down the left field line for a 4-0 lead.

Sophomore Sarah Almasy (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) tossed a four-hit shutout, striking out six and walking two in seven innings. Nyack received solid pitching from Chelsea Macaluso, who allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits in six innings.

Caldwell started off the second game well, getting a run-scoring single from Calderon that plated sophomore Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea) in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead. Nyack tied the game at 1-1 on an RBI single from Christine Klein in the top of the second. The Cougars answered with senior Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) doubling home sophomore Briana Gaspich (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) in the third, and Fryday hitting a double and scoring on a double by freshman Ana Pedroza (La Mirada, CA/La Mirada) in the fourth.

Then in the fifth, Caldwell scored four times, with Fryday, Knorr and senior Amy Leal (New Bedford, MA/Bishop Stang) driving in runs. Sophomore pitcher Hanna Walkinshaw (Aptos, CA/Aptos) did the rest, limiting the Warriors to one run on three hits while striking out a career-high nine batters in seven innings.

The Cougars return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 3 with a non-conference doubleheader against Southern Connecticut State. The first game starts at 3:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
