Box Score 2 POMONA, N.Y. – The Caldwell College baseball team lost a pair of games to Dominican College, 8-5 and 17-4 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Provident Bank Park. The results drop the Cougars to 7-21 overall and 5-5 in league play, while the Chargers improve to 17-12, 12-2 CACC.
In the first game, Dominican built a 5-0 lead with two runs in the first inning, two in the fourth and one in the fifth. In the top of the sixth, Caldwell battled back with four runs, including a two-run double by junior
Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph) and a grounder from junior
Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) that plated junior
Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo). Then in the seventh, a ground ball by junior
Thomas Pisano (N. Bellmore, NY/Mepham) allowed junior
Stephen Luczaj (N. Merrick, NY/Mepham) to score from third and tie the game at 5-5. But the Chargers tallied three unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, and blanked Caldwell in the top of the ninth for the win.
Junior right-hander
Chris DeRogatis (North Arlington, NJ/Queen of Peace) started and gave up eight runs, four earned, on nine hits in seven innings to absorb the loss. Senior
Anthony Morena (Westbury, NY/Holy Cross) went 3-for-4, while Nyitray had two hits and two runs batted in for Caldwell.
Things started well for Caldwell in Game 2, with Morena singling home O'Donnell in the top of the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Bur Dominican took over, scoring 14 runs over the first six innings to put the game out of reach. Dylan Ebel and Carlos Lopez had four hits each, and Oliver Christensen drove in four runs for Dominican. Nunez, O'Donnell and sophomore
Jack Joyce (Bayside, NY/St. Mary's) notched two hits apiece for Caldwell.
Caldwell plays a CACC doubleheader against Nyack College on Tuesday, Apr. 16. The first game begins at 12:00 p.m. at Provident Bank Park.
