PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – A bases-loaded walk in the top of the seventh inning allowed the Caldwell College baseball team to open its 2013 schedule with a 2-1 victory over Molloy College in a non-conference game at St. Joseph's College Tuesday night. The Cougars start the season with a victory for the first time since 2010, while the Lions fall to 2-10.

Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph's) produced the first run of the game with a double in the top of the fifth that plated senior
Anthony Morena (Westbury, NY/Holy Cross). Molloy tied the score in the bottom of the fifth, when Kris Kelly tripled and came home on a single by Greg Walsh. Then in the seventh, junior
Stephen Luczaj (N. Merrick, NY/Mepham) singled and moved to second on a grounder by senior
Phil Ragusa (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea). With two out, Molloy pitcher Deilyn Guzman hit Morena and Nyitray to load the bases. Junior
Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) drew a walk to bring home Luczaj for the go-ahead run.
The Cougars' pitching did the rest, as junior
Chris DeRogatis (North Arlington, NJ/Queen of Peace) retired the next six batters, and sophomore
Robert Humes (Berlin, NJ/Winslow Twp.) sat the Lions down in order in the ninth for the save. DeRogatis pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while fanning six to earn the win. Junior right-hander
Dan Bartlett (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) started and held the Lions to one run on seven hits while striking out six in five innings of work. Molloy starter Shea Spitzbarth struck out 13 batters and walked four while giving up a run on two hits in a six-inning no-decision. Guzman took the loss.

Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo) had two of Caldwell's four hits.
Caldwell heads to Florida this weekend to participate in the Palm Beach Challenge, beginning with a game against 11th-ranked Southern New Hampshire on Saturday, Mar. 9 in Lantana, Fla.
