NEWARK, N.J. – The Caldwell College baseball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Bloomfield College, winning the first game 4-2 and losing the second game 10-3, Thursday afternoon at Westside Park. The Cougars are now 3-15 overall and 1-3 in the conference, while the Deacons are 2-11, 1-3 CACC.
Caldwell scored twice in the top of the first inning of Game 1, getting a sacrifice fly from sophomore
Robert Humes (Berlin, NJ/Winslow Twp.) to score junior
Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo), and a single by
Stephen Luczaj (N. Merrick, NY/Mepham) that drove in junior
Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph). Freshman
Mike LaTorraca (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) singled home Luczaj in the third, and Nyitray scored on an error in the eighth for a 4-0 lead.
The Deacons scored runs in the eighth and ninth innings, but sophomore pitcher
Michael Sheridan (N. Caldwell, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) closed out a complete-game effort for the victory. Sheridan surrendered just five hits and two runs in nine innings of work, striking out four and walking one to improve to 1-2. Nyitray and sophomore
Jack Joyce (Bayside, NY/St. Mary's) each had three hits, while Nunez hit a pair of doubles and junior
Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) had two hits.
In the second game, Bloomfield led 5-1 when Nunez hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh to make the score 5-3. But the Deacons scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to earn the split. Luczaj went 3-for-4 with a double and a run, while O'Donnell went 2-for-3. Junior
Dan Bartlett (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) started and gave up five runs on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings for Caldwell. Francesco Scudiero earned the win for Bloomfield, allowing three runs on 11 hits in seven innings.
Caldwell hosts Felician College in another CACC doubleheader on Tuesday, Apr. 2. The first game starts at 3:00 p.m. at the Kiwanis Oval in Caldwell, N.J.
