GALLOWAY, N.J. – The Caldwell College women's track and field team opened the 2013 season at the Richard Stockton Invitational Saturday afternoon. No team scores were kept. The day was highlighted by four school records, set by sophomore
Faye Waanders (N. Haledon, NJ/Paramus Catholic) and freshmen
Taylor Landis (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) and
Melanie Negron (Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield).
Landis finished 18th in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:29.12, breaking the old record of 5:31.02 set by
Rebecca Stinger during the program's inaugural season in 2012. Waanders broke her own mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 14:25.45, nearly 26 seconds faster than her best time a year ago. The 4x100-meter relay team of juniors
Jessica Miller (Stratford, NJ/Winslow Twp.),
Nicole Pelosi (Roseland, NJ/West Essex) and
Kaitlyn Vacca (Hampton, NJ/North Hunterdon) and sophomore
Victoria dos Santos (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) placed sixth. The 4x400-meter relay team of Landis, Waanders and freshmen
Paola Moran (Gijon, Spain/Corazon de Maria) and
Fahime Farzanessa (Cologne, Germany/Humboldt) took ninth.
In the field events, Negron threw the discus 82 feet, 1/4 inch to eclipse
Taylor Baggs' previous school record of 67-5 3/4. Negron also broke the program's shot put record with a toss of 31-11 to take 11th, beating Joy Morrison's 26-11 1/2 effort. Sophomore
Erica Harrell (Richardson, TX/Plano East) placed eighth in the high jump and ninth in the triple jump.
Next up for the Cougars is the Roadrunner Invitational at Ramapo College on Saturday, Apr. 6 in Mahwah, N.J.
