Cougar Women’s Track Starts Season at Richard Stockton

GALLOWAY, N.J. – The Caldwell College women's track and field team opened the 2013 season at the Richard Stockton Invitational Saturday afternoon. No team scores were kept. The day was highlighted by four school records, set by sophomore Faye Waanders (N. Haledon, NJ/Paramus Catholic) and freshmen Taylor Landis (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) and Melanie Negron (Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield).

Landis finished 18th in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:29.12, breaking the old record of 5:31.02 set by Rebecca Stinger during the program's inaugural season in 2012. Waanders broke her own mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 14:25.45, nearly 26 seconds faster than her best time a year ago. The 4x100-meter relay team of juniors Jessica Miller (Stratford, NJ/Winslow Twp.), Nicole Pelosi (Roseland, NJ/West Essex) and Kaitlyn Vacca (Hampton, NJ/North Hunterdon) and sophomore Victoria dos Santos (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) placed sixth. The 4x400-meter relay team of Landis, Waanders and freshmen Paola Moran (Gijon, Spain/Corazon de Maria) and Fahime Farzanessa (Cologne, Germany/Humboldt) took ninth.

In the field events, Negron threw the discus 82 feet, 1/4 inch to eclipse Taylor Baggs' previous school record of 67-5 3/4. Negron also broke the program's shot put record with a toss of 31-11 to take 11th, beating Joy Morrison's 26-11 1/2 effort. Sophomore Erica Harrell (Richardson, TX/Plano East) placed eighth in the high jump and ninth in the triple jump.

Next up for the Cougars is the Roadrunner Invitational at Ramapo College on Saturday, Apr. 6 in Mahwah, N.J.
