CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader with Mercy College, 3-0 and 7-0 Sunday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The results give the Cougars a 9-4 record on the season, while the Mavericks fall to 7-10.
In the first game, Caldwell broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth, when sophomore
Briana Gaspich (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) hit a sacrifice fly to plate
Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea). Then with two outs in the sixth, senior
Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) blasted a two-run homer for a 3-0 lead. She leads the team with four homers this season.
Senior pitcher
Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing seven hits while striking out four and walking none to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Caldwell started fast in Game 2, scoring three times in the top of the first inning, including a single by sophomore
Megan Fryday (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills) that brought home Cascone. Senior
Amy Leal (N. Bedford, MA/Bishop Stang) singled home Cascone in the third for a 4-0 lead. Then in the fifth, the Cougars scored three more runs, sparked by a run-scoring single by sophomore
Sarah Almasy (Stratford, NJ/Sterling), for a 7-0 advantage.
Freshman pitcher
Amber Padilla (Chino, CA/Pamona Catholic) held Mercy scoreless over 5 2/3 innings, giving up just one hit while fanning three. Sophomore
Hanna Walkinshaw (Aptos, CA/Aptos) came on in relief and struck out three batters in 1 1/3 innings of work. Freshman
Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ/Triton Reg.) went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored in Game 2.
Caldwell plays at Bloomfield College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Tuesday, Mar. 26. The first game is set to start at 3:00 p.m. at Clarks Pond in Bloomfield, N.J.
