CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College baseball team lost to Merrimack College, 6-0 and 12-4 in a non-conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the Kiwanis Oval. The result drops the Cougars to 1-12 on the season, while the Warriors improve to 9-5.
Merrimack scored five times with two out in the third inning of Game 1, including a grand slam by Matt Brown for a 5-0 lead. The Warriors added a run in the top of the fifth, while Alek Morency held the Cougars scoreless on six hits while striking out six in a complete-game shutout. Junior
Thomas Pisano (N. Bellmore, NY/Mepham) had two hits to pace Caldwell.
In the second game, Brown hit a two-run single to spark a five-run first inning for Merrimack. The Cougars scored a run in the bottom of the first on a single by senior
Adolfo Lopez (Ontario, CA/Ontario) that plated junior
Stephen Luczaj (N. Merrick, NY/Mepham) to make the score 5-1. But the Warriors put seven runs on the scoreboard over the next four innings to take a commanding 12-1 lead. Sophomore
Jack Joyce (Bayside, NJ/St. Mary's) hit a two-run double in the sixth, and junior
Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) doubled home freshman
Alex Rodriguez (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) in the seventh.
Lopez ended up with three hits for Caldwell, with Luczaj and O'Donnell adding two hits apiece. Brown went 4-for-4 with two runs and three RBI in the second game for Merrimack.
The Cougars begin their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule with a doubleheader at Concordia College on Wednesday, Mar. 20. The first game starts at 1:30 p.m. in Bronxville, N.Y.
