CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell College baseball team fell to Merrimack College, 11-2 in the first home game of the 2013 season Saturday afternoon at the Kiwanis Oval. The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but snow halted Game 2 in the bottom of the third inning. The Cougars drop to 1-10, while the Warriors improve to 7-5.
Merrimack scored three runs in the top of the first inning, two runs in the third and four in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Pitcher Joe Carnevale held Caldwell to two runs on seven hits while striking out six in seven innings to lead Merrimack. Junior
Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph) went 3-for-4 with a double for the Cougars. Junior
Stephen Luczaj (N. Merrick, NY/Mepham) and freshman
Mike La Torraca (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) added two hits apiece. Dionys Quezada led Merrimack with three hits and three runs batted in.
Caldwell and Merrimack are scheduled to play another doubleheader on Sunday, Mar. 17. The first game starts at 12:00 p.m. at the Kiwanis Oval in Caldwell, N.J.
