Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Trailing by as many as 14 points in the second half, the Caldwell College women's basketball team came back to beat Felician College, 66-63 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Wednesday night at Job Gymnasium. The win gives the Cougars a 6-11 record on the season, including a 4-4 mark in the conference, while the Golden Falcons drop to 5-10, 5-3 CACC.
With the score tied at 61-61, Gisell Peguero scored to put Felician ahead, 63-61 with 47 seconds remaining. Caldwell answered on its next possession, as senior guard
Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) hit a lay-up and was fouled with 33 seconds left. She made the ensuing free throw for a 64-63 advantage. After a missed lay-up at the other end, freshman forward
Lisa Rovatsos (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) grabbed the rebound. Jones drew a foul and made both free throws to make it a three-point game, 66-63 with nine seconds on the clock. A three-point attempt for Felician was off the mark, giving Caldwell the come-from-behind victory.
The Golden Falcons shot 50.0 percent from the field in the first half in building a 36-24 halftime lead. Trina Plummer had 12 points for Felician and freshman guard
Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) scored eight points for Caldwell, which shot 33.3 percent from the field in the first half.
Felician pushed its lead to 41-27 with just under 18 minutes to play when the Cougars used a 15-4 run to cut the deficit to three, 45-42 at the 15:26 mark. Six different players scored in the run, with Jones and sophomore forward
Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) scoring four points each. Caldwell came within two points at the midway mark of the second half before the Golden Falcons regained control with a 9-2 run for a 58-49 advantage with six minutes remaining. The Cougars responded by scoring the next six points, including four from senior center
Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac), to make the score 58-55 Felician.
After Plummer and Felix each converted conventional three-point plays for their teams, a free throw from Rovatsos and a basket by junior guard
Marielle Duryea (Middle Village, NY/Archbishop Molloy) tied the score at 61-61 with 2:09 left, setting up Caldwell's triumphant finish. The Cougars shot an improved 45.2 percent from the floor in the second half while holding Felician to 34.3 percent.
Felix led Caldwell with 16 points to go with five rebounds, while Caswell finished with 14 points and a career-high 12 boards. Jones also had 14 points, and Duryea dished out four assists to go with six rebounds and four points. Plummer led all players with 19 points and seven assists.
The Cougars played without junior forward
Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English), who missed the first game of her career at Caldwell.
Caldwell continues CACC play with a home game against Post University on Saturday, Jan. 12. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
