Caldwell Baseball Beats Queens on the Road, 4-3

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Sophomore Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) went 3-for-4, including a home run, as the Caldwell College baseball team defeated Queens College, 4-3 in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon at Ray Metski Field. The Cougars are now 7-14 on the season, while the Knights drop to 6-12.

Rob Bernardo gave Queens an early lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. Caldwell tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third, when sophomore Tom Todaro (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) singled home sophomore Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo). Then in the fourth, O'Donnell hit a solo home run, the first of his career, to put the Cougars on top, 2-1. Junior Anthony Morena (Westbury, NY/Holy Cross) followed O'Donnell's lead, leading off the seventh inning with his first career home run for a 3-1 lead. Caldwell made it 4-1 in the eighth, when a sacrifice fly by sophomore Stephen Luczaj (N. Merrick, NY/Mepham) plated Todaro.

The Knights scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 4-3, then loaded the bases with two out in the ninth. But freshman pitcher Michael Sheridan (Caldwell, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) induced the final batter to fly out to center to end the game.

Sheridan went the distance, allowing three runs, two earned, on 10 hits while striking out six for his first collegiate victory. In addition to O'Donnell's performance at the plate, senior Joe Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan) and Morena each had two hits.

The Cougars play a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Felician College on Wednesday, Apr. 4. The first game begins at 3:00 p.m. at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex in Lyndhurst, N.J.
