CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team totaled three home runs on the day in defeating Philadelphia University, 7-3 and 7-3, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Monday afternoon at Caldwell Field. With the sweep, the Cougars remain unbeaten in conference play at 10-0 while improving to 21-6 overall. The Rams are now 5-18, 3-7 CACC.

In the first game, freshman Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) got things started with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman Briana Gaspich (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) singled home junior Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) in the bottom of the second for a 3-0 lead. After Philadelphia scored a run in the top of the third, Cascone hit an RBI double and Knorr drove in a run in the bottom of the third to make the score 5-1 Caldwell. The Cougars added runs in the fourth and fifth innings to balance two Rams' runs in the top of the fifth for a 7-3 final.

Junior Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) improved to 10-2 with a complete-game victory, allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits. Cascone went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while senior Katie Margiotta (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) had two hits.

Caldwell jumped out to an early lead in Game 2 as well, getting a run-scoring double from freshman Alyssa Calderon (Fontana, CA/Etiwanda) in the first inning for a 1-0 advantage. Philadelphia tied the game in the top of the second with a bases-loaded walk. Gaspich put the Cougars back on top in the fourth inning with a lead-off home run, her sixth of the season. Then in the fifth, Cascone doubled home junior Amy Leal (New Bedford, MA/Bishop Stang), and scored on Knorr's second home run of the day for a 5-1 advantage. The Rams put two more runs on the board in the top of the sixth, only to have Cascone hit a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 7-3 Caldwell.

Freshman Sarah Almasy (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) went the distance in the circle, giving up three runs, two earned, on six hits while striking out five and walking three. Almasy is now 7-1 on the season. Cascone drove in three runs on two hits, while Knorr, Gaspich and Calderon delivered two hits apiece.

Caldwell hosts Molloy College in a non-league doubleheader on Wednesday, Apr. 4, beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
