Sheridan Throws No-Hitter in Caldwell's 7-2 Win Over Felician

CALDWELL, N.J. – Freshman right-hander Michael Sheridan (Caldwell, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) pitched a no-hitter to lead the Caldwell College baseball team to a 7-2 victory against Felician College Thursday afternoon at the Kiwanis Oval. The win, which marked the program's first no-hitter since 2003, snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Cougars (10-23).

Sheridan faced 31 batters, walking two and striking out six while hitting one batter. He recorded 10 fly-ball outs and 11 groundouts to improve to 2-3 on the season. The no-hitter is in stark contrast to the last game played by Caldwell and Felician in which the Golden Falcons pounded out 18 hits for a 17-2 victory on Apr. 4. The last Cougar to throw a no-hitter was Brian Moyle, who blanked Bloomfield in a seven-inning victory on May 4, 2003 at Breslin Park.

Caldwell took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third, when senior Jorge Ynoa (Bayside, NY/Bayside) and junior Adolfo Lopez (Ontario, CA/Ontario) drove in runs. Felician (18-20) struck in the top of the fourth, with Mickey Zudonyi getting hit by a pitch, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt, stealing third and coming home on an error. But the Cougars took control of the game with five runs in the bottom of the sixth, including a three-run double by Ynoa for a 7-1 advantage. Freshman Jack Joyce (Bayside, NY/St. Mary's) also singled in a run in the inning.

In the top of the seventh, Jimmy Simpson walked, advanced to third on an error and came home on a groundout by Mike Farrell to make the score 7-2.

Ynoa went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI, while sophomore Phil Ragusa (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) and freshman Robert Humes (Berlin, NJ/Winslow Twp.) each had two hits. Ragusa was behind the plate for Sheridan's no-hitter.

A native of Caldwell, N.J., Sheridan, who was making his fifth start of the season, had yet to pitch at the Kiwanis Oval until Thursday. “I've never thrown a no-hitter before, and it was great to do it at home, in front of our students,” Sheridan said. “My sister was there, too, which was important to me.

“We have two big conference games coming up this weekend, so hopefully this will spark something for us.”

The Cougars take on Chestnut Hill College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 21. The first game starts at 12:00 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
