CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell College baseball team lost a pair of games to Dominican College, 11-5 and 5-2 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Kiwanis Oval. The Cougars are now 9-21 on the season, while the Chargers improve to 15-20.
Xavier Bonilla got Dominican off to a fast start in Game 1 with a three-run homer in the top of the first. The Chargers built a 7-0 lead into the bottom of the eighth, until senior Joe Doerrer (Middletown, NJ/Raritan) hit a two-run double for Caldwell's first runs of the game. Dominican put four more runs on the scoreboard in the top of the ninth, including a two-run single by Chris Gonzalez, for an 11-2 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, sophomore Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville), freshman Michael Daniels (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and senior Jorge Ynoa (Bayside, NY/Bayside) each drove in runs to make the score 11-5.
Ynoa went 3-for-5, while sophomore Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph's) had two hits. Justin Moore pitched seven scoreless innings to earn the win for Dominican.
The Chargers struck first in the second game with runs in the second and third innings for a 2-0 lead. A double by Tyler Clark in the sixth brought home Gonzalez to make the score 3-0. O'Donnell led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple, then came home on a double by junior Anthony Morena (Westbury, NY/Holy Cross). Ynoa made it 3-2 when his grounder plated Morena, who had moved to third on a wild pitch. But a two-run double from Tyler Sadowske in the top of the eighth restored the Chargers' three-run lead, 5-2.
Senior A.J. Boardman (Sunnyside, NY/St. Francis) started on the mound for Caldwell and allowed three runs on six hits in seven innings. Morena finished with two hits. For Dominican, Dustin Javins pitched a complete game, giving up two runs on six hits.
Next up for Caldwell is a non-conference doubleheader at St. Thomas Aquinas College on Sunday, Apr. 15. The first game starts at 12:00 p.m. in Sparkill, N.Y.
