PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Caldwell College baseball team swept a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games at Philadelphia University Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Cougars, who won both games by the score of 3-2, are now 6-14 overall and 6-1 in league play, while the Rams fall to 6-23 overall, 0-7 CACC.

Caldwell scored first in Game 1, as junior Adolfo Lopez (Ontario, CA/Ontario) singled home senior Jorge Ynoa (Bayside, NY/Bayside) from second base in the top of the third. In the fifth inning, Ynoa plated sophomore Stephen Dodd (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) with a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead. Dodd then made it 3-0 with a single in the top of the seventh that scored sophomore Paul Nyitray (Cranford, NJ/St. Joseph), who led off the inning with a double. Philadelphia scored an unearned run in the eighth and loaded the bases in the ninth, bringing home a run with a grounder to make the score 3-2 Caldwell. But sophomore Robert Bennetti (Laurence Harbor, NJ/Old Bridge) induced another grounder to end the threat and the game.

Senior right-hander Craig Gourley (Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) blanked the Rams on five hits while striking out eight in six innings of work for his first win of the season. Bartlett pitched the final three innings to pick up the save. Lopez went 3-for-4 at the plate in the victory.

In the second game, Philadelphia scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning for a 2-0 lead. The Cougars, who left nine runners on base over the first six innings, finally broke through in the top of the seventh. Ynoa and sophomore Andrew Nunez (East Elmhurst, NY/Cardozo) had RBI singles to tie the score at 2-2. Then in the ninth, sophomore Joe O'Donnell (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) led off with a single, moved to third on a bunt and a Nunez single, and scored on a throwing error for a 3-2 Caldwell lead. The Rams had runners at first and third in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to score the tying run.

Freshman Robert Humes (Berlin, NJ/Winslow Twp.) started on the mound and gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out a career-best eight batters and walking three in 7 1/3 innings. Senior Matt Cook (Manalapan, NJ/ Manalapan) allowed a hit and no runs in 1 2/3 innings of relief to earn the win. Dodd had three hits, and Nunez went 2-for-2 offensively for Caldwell.

The Cougars play a non-conference game at Queens College on Tuesday, Apr. 3, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Flushing N.Y.
