NEWTOWN, Pa. – The Caldwell College softball team swept Holy Family University, 5-3 and 6-0 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Helen Randle Park. The wins keep the Cougars (16-5) unbeaten in the conference at 6-0, while the Tigers drop to 10-10, 4-2 CACC.
Caldwell took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of Game 1 on a bases-loaded grounder by freshman Briana Gaspich (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial). After Holy Family scored twice in the bottom of the second for a 2-1 lead, Gaspich tied the game in the top of the third with her third home run of the season. In the top of the fourth, sophomore Nicole Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) hit a two-run single, and junior Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) stole home to put the Cougars on top 5-2. The Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out single by Erica Reis, but junior pitcher Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) struck out the final batter for the win.
Wilson allowed three runs, two earned, on eight hits in a complete-game effort to improve to 8-2. Cascone and freshman Alyssa Calderon (Fontana, CA/Etiwanda) had two hits apiece for Caldwell.
In the second game, freshman pitcher Hanna Walkinshaw (Aptos, CA/Aptos) kept the Tiger hitters off-balance in a four-hit shutout. Walkinshaw (4-2) struck out a career-high eight batters in recording her second shutout of the season. A pair of two-run doubles by Gaspich and Calderon in the top of the third game the Cougars a 4-0 lead. Then in the seventh, Cascone doubled home senior Katie Margiotta (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), and scored on a single by Velardi to put Caldwell ahead 6-0.
The Cougars host Bloomfield College on Tuesday, Mar. 27 in another CACC doubleheader. The first game starts at 2:30 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
